Trap Drum Pattern

Trap drums are written at a fast tempo but feel half as fast: the clap or snare lands only on beat 3 of each bar, while the hi-hats run in 8ths and 16ths with quick rolls. The kick is sparse and usually doubles as the 808 bass.

Tempo: 130–150 BPM (felt in half time, 65–75) (see all genres in the BPM chart). Each bar is counted in 16th notes: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a. Here is where every instrument plays in the main pattern:

Tip: Change the hi-hat rolls every two or four bars and keep the kick and clap steady. Most of the movement in a trap beat comes from the hats.
