House Drum Pattern

House drums are built on the four-on-the-floor kick: one kick on every beat. A clap on beats 2 and 4 and an open hi-hat on every off-beat ("and") give the classic house pulse, and 16th-note closed hats or shakers fill in the movement.

The house beat, step by step

Tempo: 118–128 BPM (see all genres in the BPM chart). Each bar is counted in 16th notes: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a. Here is where every instrument plays in the main pattern:

InstrumentBar 1Bar 2
Kick1, 2, 3, 41, 2, 3, 4
Clap2, 42, 4
Closed hat— + 8 ghost— + 8 ghost
Open hat1&, 2&, 3&, 4&1&, 2&, 3&, 4&

Tip: Shorten the open hat so that it ends before the next kick. That makes the kick and hat pump against each other.

How to use the MIDI in FL Studio, Ableton and Logic
