Afrobeats Drum Pattern

Afrobeats drums get their movement from several simple parts working around each other. The kick gives weight without filling every gap, a rim or snare plays a skipping, clave-like pattern, a clap marks beats 2 and 4, and shakers keep the 16ths moving.

The afrobeats beat, step by step

Tempo: 95–115 BPM (see all genres in the BPM chart). Each bar is counted in 16th notes: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a. Here is where every instrument plays in the main pattern:

InstrumentBar 1Bar 2
Kick1, 2&, 31, 2&, 3, 4&
Clap2, 42, 4
Rim1, 1a, 2&, 3&, 41, 1a, 2&, 3&, 4
Shakerevery 8th + 8 ghostevery 8th + 8 ghost

Tip: Keep the shaker velocity uneven, with accents on the beat and quieter notes between them. That accent pattern drives the groove more than the kick does.
