Techno Drum Pattern

Techno drums use the same four-on-the-floor kick as house but feel more mechanical and driving. Off-beat open hats, steady 16th hats and short percussion loops (rims, toms) that repeat with small changes carry the groove.

The techno beat, step by step

Tempo: 125–140 BPM (see all genres in the BPM chart). Each bar is counted in 16th notes: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a. Here is where every instrument plays in the main pattern:

InstrumentBar 1Bar 2
Kick1, 2, 3, 41, 2, 3, 4
Clap—4
Rim1&, 2e, 3&, 4e1&, 2e, 3&, 4e, 4a
Closed hat1, 2, 3, 4 + 8 ghost1, 2, 3, 4 + 8 ghost
Open hat1&, 2&, 3&, 4&1&, 2&, 3&, 4&

Tip: Make one percussion loop three steps long and let it run against the 16-step bar. The pattern shifts each bar and keeps a simple beat interesting.
