Disco Drum Pattern

Disco drums are the root of house: a kick on every beat, a snare on 2 and 4 and an open hi-hat on every off-beat. Closed 16th hats and a tom or snare fill at the end of a phrase complete the classic disco groove.

The disco beat, step by step

Tempo: 110–125 BPM (see all genres in the BPM chart). Each bar is counted in 16th notes: 1 e & a, 2 e & a, 3 e & a, 4 e & a. Here is where every instrument plays in the main pattern:

InstrumentBar 1Bar 2
Kick1, 2, 3, 41, 2, 3, 4
Snare2, 42, 4
Closed hat1, 2, 3, 4 + 8 ghost1, 2, 3, 4 + 8 ghost
Open hat1&, 2&, 3&, 4&1&, 2&, 3&, 4&

Tip: Let the open hat ring a little longer than in house. Disco hats were played by a drummer and have more sustain.
